This was a re-read. I felt like re-reading this after reading Little Fires Everywhere late last year. I loved both and I suppose I kind of wanted to compare the two. What drew me to this book was obviously the background, culture of the family and themes of mixed race. I’m a Canadian born Chinese who grew up in the 70’s (I was Hannah’s age in 1977) so I understand well being different, growing up in a time when my sister and I were the only Chinese kids in our school for a couple of years. A lot of those pressures existed for me as we ...more
