What Members Thought
This was a re-read. I felt like re-reading this after reading Little Fires Everywhere late last year. I loved both and I suppose I kind of wanted to compare the two. The bottom line is, these books definitely bear some similarities and yet both are great -- it got me thinking that they would be great to do together in a book club setting, as there are some common themes that struck me this time around (having read LFE and being able to compare) like different shades of the same conversation. If I could give this novel 6 stars, I would. It’s truly a phenomenal debut from a brilliant writer. The story is full of grief and loss and love in all of the best, most beautiful ways. It’s a complete exploration of the complexities of family life and being different than those around you. I can no longer look at a hard boiled egg without thinking of heartbreak.

Neither parent thought of the welfare of their children except in t ...more

Enjoyed this book -has been on my to read list since it came out but I read it after the author’s second book “Little Fires”. What drew me to this book was obviously the background, culture of the family and themes of mixed race. I’m a Canadian born Chinese who grew up in the 70’s (I was Hannah’s age in 1977) so I understand well being different, growing up in a time when my sister and I were the only Chinese kids in our school for a couple of years. A lot of those pressures existed for me as we
