My my my this is a tough one. Incredible book and well-written by Ng - I mean we all have family issues, but showcasing how various members of a family all experience the same event differently is rarely done as well as Ng does it here.

Now - we all have skeletons in our family closets... luckily my bones came out of ours many years ago. Granted - there's plenty more where that came from!

A superbly written, redeeming family drama. Tragic, sure, and set in the 1970's with the easier to see skewed gender roles, racial bias, etc, it was both disturbing and enlightening (in a wtf? kind of way).
It's not for those looking for something light or humorous. But if you want to sink your teeth into a complex, well paced family drama, you've come to the right book. ...more

A portrait of a interracial family and their struggles coping with each other and life in general. The middle "golden child" Lydia dies (right from the beginning, this is not a spoiler) and the story moves back and forth through time, focusing on different individuals in the family.
