I cried so hard during certain parts of this book. It really hits you how long the damn war was when things go from bad to worse to worstest. Sure, some of the writing is a little cliche'd and the dialogue threw me off at the beginning (the only French the author interwove was the occasional "Oui"... compared with how much I'm reading in War and Peace it felt like she just used the language to remind the reader that the story is set in France). I didn't really like it at first. The storyline was certainly interesting, as (in my opinion) most historical fiction novels about WWII are. But the characters bothered me. They came across as fairly one-dimensional and the relationships didn't seem all that developed.

Absolutely heartbreaking. I cried every day I listened to it and I still couldn't stop listening.
