I cried so hard during certain parts of this book. It really hits you how long the damn war was when things go from bad to worse to worstest. Sure, some of the writing is a little cliche'd and the dialogue threw me off at the beginning (the only French the author interwove was the occasional "Oui"... compared with how much I'm reading in War and Peace it felt like she just used the language to remind the reader that the story is set in France). I loved this book. Very strong character development and well researched historical fiction.
I didn't really like it at first. The storyline was certainly interesting, as (in my opinion) most historical fiction novels about WWII are. But the characters bothered me. They came across as fairly one-dimensional and the relationships didn't seem all that developed.

The Nightingale is a terrific book and hasn't been sitting on the New York Times bestseller list for a long time for nothing!

Speechless. Beautiful story. Heartbreaking. Enlightening.
What an amazing book. A light into the horrors and what women went through during the time of occupied France during WWII. Amazing and inspiring.
I can't remember the last time I wept while reading a book! Such a great story!
