"I'm the first person to be alone on an entire planet."
What an amazing story. Watney is funny and witty and has a ferocious will to survive. From page one, you are rooting him on. He details out every struggle and every plan. He gives you the highs and lows and everything in between.
At the same time, you're with NASA with each news report, catastrophe, plan and horror filled moment. This isn't a book with warm fuzzy feelings and you're right to be worried the whole way and worry about those in s ...more

The Martian has been on my to read list for a while. For many reasons it kept getting pushed back and even though we had movies and lots of trailers I vowed to read any of it until I finished the book. When I saw it on audible and heard RC Bray narrate I was hooked. Audiobooks for me tend to take about 3 weeks and I finished this one in under a week. This story completely captivated me.

"Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.
Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there."
Mark is a modern day Robinson Crusoe. I couldn't put this novel down; I had an overnight business trip and read it every opportunity I got. It tool only two days to finish this. It's the best novel I've read this year (21 novels so far).

OMG! Loved it! Great premise, great storyline, great suspense! The only downside is the science tangents. Watney's character explains every bit of MacGyver-ing that he has to do in incredible detail. My background in astro-engineering-chemistry-botony is a little rusty, so when he starts droning on about hydrolizing molecules of whatever I tended to skim over it and think "ok, sure, if you say so." It reminded me a little of Michael Crichton's writing, he also gets a little science-happy. But th

Such a nerdy book! I guess that's necessary though when you're just this one lonely guy trapped on Mars. Non-nerds would probably not survive. So kudos to nerds!
I was surprised that a story which seemed to center on just one single protagonist was so compelling. The science, although I didn't get like 99.9% of it, was immensely intriguing and explained in such a way that you didn't have to totally understand it because you can catch his drift. Even though a lot of the parts of the plot seemed l ...more
