Review to come. If you decide to read this book try to find whichever edition has the Newbery Acceptance Speech at the end. It's a sort of afterward for the novel penned by the author. It reveals a lot of her inspirations and the intended themes, written in a wonderfully emotional way. Really cemented this as a five star read.

Read with my son Matthew. This is a novel many of my students and peers mentioned to me in the past. For a young adult novel, this one does what it's supposed to. It caused my son and I to discuss what it means to be part of a community, personal and social responsibility and loss of innocence.

I am VERY intrigued to see where this storyline goes! It starts out with a rather dystopian plot line, kids reach a certain age and are selected for a role in the community, very "Divergent-esque" so far. Then Jonas, the main character, is chosen to be the Reciever of Memory. How interesting, he will be the only person with access to the collective unconscious of mankind, but he is forbidden from sharing them with anyone. So no one remembers anything from past? I don't know how I missed this book when I was teaching??? I downloaded it to read to listen to on a trip to see my granddaughter's travel basketball game in WV. Good story that kept me awake, but wish the plot had been developed a bit more. It is a YA book, but the teens I know would expect more.
