Magic technology lets a man go to Mars where he learns the local's language, joins their culture, then has to come home again to tell his story. I've read that book before, thanks to Singularity and Co. It's A Plunge Into Space or Mr. Stranger's Sealed Packet, both of which predate this work by nearly a half century.

Having read and enjoyed the Chronicles of Narnia, I was expecting something akin to Narnia in space. It ended up feeling more like John Carter of Mars. Of course, Barsoom is swapped for Malacandra, but we have Ransom exploring the new planet, meeting different races, and discovering what it's like to live in lower gravity. We don't have sword fighting tharks or a princess in distress, so the similarity only goes so far.

Nonetheless, it's a fun story.
