This was more than a well-crafted suspense novel. The world-building was very reinforced, perhaps too-much so in one direction, but the effect was pleasing. Snippets of interviews and the children's book sufficed to creep me out consistently. As for the main character, I was generally just fine with the idea that she was a six year old in a 26 year old body for a very good reason. She was super naive. That's fine for a character, but it did give the readers a bit of breathing space. Omniscient v

Whoa! nobody does walking dead quite like Mira Grant. And make no mistake this is another twist on the zombie genre that lifts it from pulp horror to science fiction.
What makes her stories so compelling is just how believable they are. That feeling of '5 minutes in the future' - like this is all nearly possible already. As much as the science the in fighting among the scientists and the avarice and political machinations just ring so true.

I'm not sure it's a very good idea for other characters to keep telling your reader what a dull and boring person your main character is. I probably would have come to that conclusion on my own, anyway, but still. And the dullness and boringness, not to mention the OCD-ness and timidness and a few other -nesses make Sal's relationship with the otherwise fairly normal-seeming Dr. Nathan Kim a bit hard to believe.

Can I just express my love for Mira Grant? I discovered her writing only a year ago, and I've devoured everything of hers that I've come upon. After reading the Newsflesh books, I was excited to hear that she had started another series. Because of that, it was already on my to read list when I found out that it was nominated for a Hugo award.

I received this book as part of the Hugo voting packet, and ended up liking it in spite of itself. Robin Cook ruined medical drama for me years ago, and zombie stories fall out of range of my willing suspension of disbelief, but this one is well written and engaging enough to be fun anyway. Even though the 'big reveal', saved by the author for the very last page, is obvious from at least chapter 2.

Zombie Parasitocalypse. I can be fairly down with parasites, but I'm really not down with zombies.
