This book is organized as a dictionary, but the definitions of the various words combine to paint a story of a relationship. The lover is never named, his/her gender never specified. I read it at one sitting, but I found so many little tidbits to go back and re-read later that I ran out of bookmarks!

An example worth remembering in any loving relationship:

Common words used to describe this book: smart and original (or similar).

I agree, this is a cleverly written book, though to call it a novel is stretching it, imho. The relationship described has a very real feel to it, in terms of the emotions and situations the characters go through. I feel like most people would be able to put insert themselves into some part of the story. Each page includes a different word and anecdote describing said word. This was different than any other book I've ever read and that's what hooked me first, then I was hooked by the story being told. I completely devoured this and would never have thought to read it if it was for a reading challenge. Such a lovely surprise. :)

Excerpt:

indelible, adj.

That first night, you took your finger and pointed to the top of my head, then traced a line between my eyes, down my nose, over my lips, down my neck, to the center of my chest. It was so surprising, I knew I would never mimic it. That one gesture would be yours forever.

I loved this book. the dictionary structure was really original. I enjoyed the structure and how entries on the begining, middle and end of the relationship were all jumbled up. Thumbs up, Leviathan!

This seems to be a Marmite book - some people love it and some people don't like it at all.

Some people assume that "you", the other person, is female, while I assumed "you" was male. (The narrator is stated as male.) This may make a difference to whether you like the book or not. I think "you" is easier to like as a man, although I know that's sexist.

Also, some reviewers seem to think the ending is completely different from what I thought. Didn't they read the definition of "yesterday"?
