I remember watching the movie years ago and liking it, but I had never read the book. There were a lot of differences from the movie, at least from what I remember, but I will say that it has made me want to watch the movie again.
Matilda's parents were just so awful to her, neglectful and showing complete favoritism to their son. I can't comprehend leaving a 4 year old home alone for hours, but that's what they did every day.

An indulgent re-read. This is probably my favorite Dahl book, as it probably is for almost all people who were once book-obsessed little kids like Matilda. On this reread, it struck me that the lesson that sometimes your blood family just sucks and you have to pick someone else to love instead is actually pretty ahead of its time, and still is pretty rare to see today.
