This article on stories that scare the hell out of authors has interested me in Shirley Jackson. She was mentioned by several authors and two of the specific stories mentioned are in this book, 'The Daemon Lover' and 'The Lottery'.

Update: This was my first time reading the entire collection. Prior to this I had only read "The Lottery" and "Charles" which I forgot was her until I started re-reading it. I'll post more soon on the individual stories but the whole collection was fabulous.

Read this in my first year of university. While all the other short stories were mundane and uninspiring, "The Lottery" stood out as a terrifying masterpiece. I loved it, and still do. The morbid conclusion will send shivers down your spine.
