I quoted Julie's comment on the Messenger because it made me felt the same way.
The ending of the book gave me goose bumps specially in the part where the Leader picked up the Healer's body and when the village started keening.

It had been awhile since I read The Giver and Gathering Blue, the other two "companion books" in this series so things were a bit fuzzy to me. It took me a while to realize that "Leader" in this book is Jonas from The Giver and that "Seer" is Kira's Gathering Blue father. Once my memory was refreshed I really ended up liking this one. I would like to read more about Jonas, Kira, and Gabe (had forgotten him too) but if the 4th book never materializes I'm okay with the way this one wrapped up.

This is such a great series and each book is its own delight to read. Lois Lowry has quickly become one of my favourite authors and I think I've read almost the entire Giver quartet in about a month. It is well written, but goes by so fast because you are so drawn in by the characters and the story. Highly recommended for any age.

Without spoiling, I have to say that I so hated the end!
Of the three in this group, I liked this one the least. The quality of writing didn't seem as good and the characters didn't draw me in like the other books. It was nice to see Matty, Kira and Jonas again. ...more

I guess I didn't get this one. Nor was the story very compelling or interesting. The ending left me saying, "What?"
