This is the first time I've actually read this book and I am very much influenced by the movies! I was expecting hot air balloons and kept looking for the 'balloon ride' part in the book. I was very much surprised when I reached the end of the book and there was ONLY 1 mention of 'balloon'. It was only mentioned in passing. Well...

This was a great adventure story, with very interesting characters. Phileas Fogg who is a very eccentric gentleman, and who follows a very strict daily routine, embarks on an adventure around the world in eighty days on the whim of a bet. Phileas Fogg bets 20,000 pounds on his success with his friends at the Gentleman's club he attends. Without delay he takes his new servant Passepartout and leaves the very same day to start his journey. With his entire fortune at stake he really can't afford to

I kept waiting for the hot air balloon. I seriously can't believe how many covers feature a hot air balloon when there is no hot air balloon in the book. Now with that aside...
I liked this more than I expected. Classics aren't my favorite genre by any stretch, but I did become pretty engaged at around a third of the way through. It was very funny, I didn't expect that. I really loved Passpartout. He was my favorite character by and far. I was also surprised that it had a romantic aspect.

This is my first Jules Verne venture.
I enjoyed the story very much. It's so interesting, though, how 18th century literature is different than contemporary fiction. Character development is different, scene description is different. Had this been written by a 21st century novelist, it would be 800 pages long! Each of the exciting scenes (saving Aouda, the Indian heist of the train car, etc) would be 100 pages long, with descriptions of all minor characters.

This book surprised me. It was a lot of fun and easy to follow and enjoy. There were a lot of great descriptions and adventures throughout the journey. There was the question of whether Fogg was who he seemed to be and the suspense of whether he could make it in time. As can be expected by a book by a European author written in the 1800s, there were a few times where I cringed over the description of the people Fogg came across in his journey (basically any one that was not European was a savage

A delightful adventure with an interesting twist at the end.
I do like the thought of just heading off round the world on a bit of a whim, but other than Passepartout I didn't really connect with any of the characters that much and Phileas Fogg's motivations for the trip were a bit spurious. ...more

This was a cute, quick read, that wasn't exactly what I expected it to be, but I really enjoyed all the same.
