I read this for the first contact category in my SF Reading Challenge.

Centuries after a nuclear war destroys civilization on Earth, the main character, Lilith Iyapo, awakes to discover that she is held captive aboard a starship. Her captors, the Oankali, have rescued the remaining humans and restored Earth. However, this rescue was not without a catch -- these hideously grotesque aliens survive by merging genetically with primitive peoples.

Another book that wanted me to think, hurray! While the story seemed more driven by the premise than its characters, it raised interesting questions about gender and sexual autonomy, reproductive rights, evolution, the costs of self-determination, and more. If the book didn't exactly thrill me, I do feel I need to read the next two books in the series to know whether Butler was making an argument (in which case I need to hear it in full) or merely raising questions for the reader to consider (wh ...more
