The best thing about this book is the narrator - Peter Grant has a beautifully British POV with a dry, sardonic humor. He really carries the book.
It was interesting to not only have a mixed race MC for a British police procedural, but also that he was so young and new in his career. Even without the supernatural element, that added a fresh coat of paint to things.
The view of magic/the supernatural reminded me a lot of the Dresden Files without feeling like it was copying, which was nice.

Actually surprisingly enjoyable. Female character treatment could be better, but I like the urban fantasy crossed with detective procedural-- kind of like Warehouse 13 or something like that. The plot was good and engaging enough and I liked the background characters, plus this hits two of my buttons for modern fantasy, which is a) earth-bound human-like personifications of deities/concepts/ideas, like the river people, and b) magic that in part is centered around what feels correct and powerful
