The Awakening is book two in The Darkest Power YA series by Kelley Armstrong.

Chloe Saunders is the main character and recently discovered she is a necromancer. A necromancer is someone who can communicate and raise the dead. She’s just learning about her gift and is raising the dead (zombies) by accident and talking to ghosts without realizing they’re dead. Chloe is a quiet 15 year old girl, who is an aspiring filmmaker. She’s just learning about her gift and is raising the dead (zombies) by accident and talking to ghosts without realizing they’re dead. Chloe is a quiet 15 year old girl, who is an aspiring filmmaker. This aspiration comes out in her narration, as she often relates her life to a film. She’s an entertaining character and I find myself deeply concerned for her and wanting her to develop her skills and get her HEA.

Simon Bea and Derek Souza are foster brothers who meet Chloe at Lyle House, which turns out to be a home for supernaturally gifted teens. Simon is a sorcerer and Derek is a werewolf, although they’ve known about their supernatural gifts since they were young and rescued from the lab by their foster father. Simon and Chloe are crushing on each other, although it seems that Simon is more interested in Chloe and I believe her interest in Derek may be more than she’s willing to admit to herself. Torrie Enright is a self centered teenager, who bullies Chloe for taking attention, mainly Simon’s attention, away from her.

Chloe’s mother died and her father spends most of his time away on business. Chloe’s Aunt, Dr. Lauren Fellows, played a predominant role in her life growing up and she recently discovered that her Lauren is a part of the Edison Group. Dr. Marcel Davidoff is a doctor at the Edison Group, which experimented with the teens’ DNA and is killing off the teens who they believe are unsuccessful experiments.

The first books takes place at Lyle House, a home for psychologically disturbed teenagers. The teens are suspicious about the facility and believe it may be a jail for supernatural teens and those who are sent away are actually murdered. Chloe decides to escape with Simon, Derek, and Rachelle. During their escape, the boys and girls are separated. Chloe injures her arm and Rae convinces her to call her Aunt to get medical help. This was a set up by Rae, and Chloe ends up captured at the Edison Group’s facility.

In this book, Chloe discovers the Edison Group experimented with DNA to create supernatural children and that her Aunt Lauren was a part of the group. After discovering that Rae was the reason for her capture, she decides to keep what she knows to herself. Torrie helps Chloe escape and they join us with Simon and Derek , living on the streets. They have many adventures on their way to New York to stay with Andrew, a friend of the boys’ foster father. During their trip, Derek and Chloe separate from the group while he begins his change into a werewolf. Derek and Chloe become close during the trip and I’m hoping this will turn into more than just a friendship. Derek and Chloe reunited with Simon and Torrie at Andrew’s home, to find out he’s been captured by the Edison Group. The EG shows up again and tries to capture/kill the teens. Chloe sees her Aunt and believes she may be a ghost, murdered by the EG. The story ends with the teens at a safe house, regrouping to jail break their friends from the laboratory and to destroy the group once and for all.

This is a quick read, an intense and fast story. I loved it, much more than the first book and I can’t wait for the next one.

This book didn't grab me as much as The Summoning had bit it was still a decent read. This sequel felt more like a bridge from the first book to the third. I didn't really learn anything new besides the fact that Tori is a witch and that there may be some sort of love triangle going on between Chloe, Derek and Simon.

I wanted to know more about the demi-demon Chloe spoke to and I wouldn't liked the characters to develop and learn more about their powers.
