During the Napoleonic Era, a British Navy Captain and his crew conquer a French ship. After boarding the French vessel, they discover it was carrying an extremely valuable dragon's egg. When the egg hatches before the ship is able to return to England, the ship's captain must bond with the hatchling or risk losing the dragon for England. It's not easy to choose an audiobook that my whole family wants to listen to:
--Husband, who rarely reads anything less than 100 years old
--Me, an easy date since I read everything
--A 12 year old boy, who wants action, fantasy, and a reasonably plot-driven narrative
--A 9 year old girl, who doesn't want too much action and cares a lot about characters and their inner feelings
This book was a perfect fit for the whole car for a long drive. I knew it was a success when different people kept asking to ...more

Such a clever alternate history tale! There was no such thing as Aerial Corps during Napoleonic Wars IRL, of course, but in an alternate universe, there were dragons...

Loved the first half when it was more about exploring the new world for Laurence. I was less jazzed about the war-focused latter part. Turns out I don't like my dragons battling each other.
