This is a compelling read. I wish I hadn't seen the movie first, but even knowing what was coming up didn't ruin it for me.
spoiler alert: It wasn't until the younger of the two surviving women prisoners says to the narrator at the end of the book "That woman was truly brutal....did you get over the fact that you were only fifteen when she..." that I thought about Hanna's part in the narrator's inability to form a successful relationship with anyone else.

This book is a hard book for me to rate.
Even though I enjoyed the story, the book was missing something for me. I had a hard time relating to the characters and their relationship was just to over the top and lacking emotion for me. Fifteen year old Michael meets Hanna, a much older woman on his way home from school one day when he falls ill. Once Michael is on the mend, he decides to look up Hanna and so begins this odd relationship between a fifteen year old and a thirty six year old.

I still feel torn on this one-I'll probably come back and edit this again soon. I liked the whole notion of how you can walk around for years with one perception of a situation in your head and then find out you had it all wrong but I guess the idea of going so far to hide a secret just didn't sit right with me. Still feel like I need to think this one over some more.
