One of my favorite books period! This first book in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series sets up a fascinating relationship between two intriguing characters. The reader becomes ensconced into the world of these two.
I am not a big fan of Sherlock Holmes stories. Perhaps I read too many of them when I was younger and just burned out. I do like the TV show "Elementary", which is a more modern Sherlock Holmes story.
All of that is to point out that, if I had known this was a Sherlock Holmes story, I might not have read it. However, I did and enjoyed it a lot, especially the focus on Mary and her interactions with Holmes. A nice new look at this old character. ...more

I liked the premise of this a lot, and thought I would really like it. But it was much too slow in the beginning and read too much like a memoir. I wanted her to get on to the action/mystery portion of the story! Once that happened, the story started to move and I enjoyed it much more. It made me want to reread some Sherlock Holmes mysteries. It's been much too long since I read any.

I was trepidatious about delving into a Holmes-post-retirement story, but overall I found the characterization not too distractingly off target. I thought the mentorship relationship was believable and satisfying. I enjoy Mary very much, but prickle at the treatment of "Uncle John;" Watson is NOBODY's "doddering old fool." I figured I would look into the rest of the series, but the new direction of the Holmes/Russell partnership (noted casually in book summaries) has me looking seven ways askanc
