Heart of Darkness is something that tends to come up as a literary metaphor for something, and I thought I should read it to understand why. I'm still not entirely convinced, I think I'll keep using Lord of the Flies to reference the savage nature waiting to be unleashed within humanity, rather than the very, very, very dark jungles, and natives waiting to infect us with their savagery. Probably my favorite book of all time and strangely enough it took about 3 readings to get a clear idea of the storyline. Not because it's a difficult to follow story but because I became so immersed that afterwords it felt a little bit like a dream, and you know how hard it is to remember your dreams. I know modernist literature isn't my cup of tea, but this story had so much potential to be exciting and it is a little disappointing. A sailor's story! I love those!
