I really like listening to Murakami's books. With a good reader, I find myself involved in the emotional pull of the book much more quickly and easily in audio book format. The readers here were fantastic and really brought this book to life. I would still recommend that new readers of Murakami's work start with one of the more classic choices like The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle instead of jumping in here. But for Murakami fans this book absolutely delivers and is highly recommended. The story lines

We follow the stories of a 15 year old runaway boy and an old mentally disabled old man who whilst appeared not to have anything to do with each other are somehow linked. There are parts to the stories which are intriguing but most are just strange. This definitely would not be a book I’d recommend to my more conservative friends noting the sexual content & “Oedipean curse”. At the end, we are left to infer some conclusions & meanings for ourselves.

While I can appreciate Murakami's creativity and talent, I didn't necessarily love this. I am far too literal minded for Slipstream, I just end up confused. In the end I stopped trying to figure it out and just kind of went with it which seemed to work well. You just have to get comfortable with unanswered questions.

I really enjoyed this book. I found myself reading it late into the night and also when I had chances during the day.
The characters were fantastic, especially Nakata, and the story drew me in, exploring choices, destiny and finding oneself. The fantastical elements mixed seamlessly with the more realistic ones giving a rounded, wonderful read.
In planning to Japan, there are a few areas featured in here that I plan to visit, and having them featured was fun too!
