I've enjoyed later books by Okorafor, and wanted to read this, her first. It's very similar, in theme and tone, to her Akata Witch. Like it, this sits right between juvenile and young adult. It would be great for middle school kids or for more mature elementary school kids. The arrival of Zahrah's menses is mentioned, in a rather matter-of-fact way; but it is central to the plot, because her abilities as a windseeker only begin to manifest after that.
