This was quite a book. It took me FOREVER to read it. I am still not clear in my mind exactly how I feel about it. I can say the last half of the book was much better than the first half. The first half would get a 2 out of 5 and the last half would get a 4. I thought the author was very thorough in his story telling. So much so, I think the novel dragged. Especially in the beginning. I don’t understand why he went in so much detail about the grandparents of the main character. Yes, their histor ...more

I ended up reading this book in pretty much two settings, staying up far too late to do so.

The book was beautifully written, and while the main characters gender issues are revealed on the first page of the book, the journey Cal takes in discovering himself and his family history is an amazing one. While you feel sympathy for Cal, the final feeling is one of respect, for the strength he ultimately shows.

This is one book I wish I would have gotten in print. What a great story! But the narration is SO awful and every so often there is this strange, distracting music that comes out of nowhere and has NOTHING to do with the story. I'm only 10 minutes from finishing it. ...more

This book was ok. But I really don't get why Cal was narrating from an omniscient point-of-view. Why did he know what happened to his grandparents and parents when he wasn't even born yet? Also, why did he know what was going on around Middlesex when he ran away? I think Eugenides picked a wrong way to tell his story.
I like the part with the Obscure Object though.
I would have given this book a higher rating, believe me, I love the story, if it wasn't for the illogical narration.

P.S. I LOVE Desd

This story is about Callie Stephanides who grows up as a girl but then when she's a teenager, she becomes a boy and calls herself, Cal. Although the book is over 500 pages and there are some medical terms too hard to pronounce throughout the story, I thought it was an interesting read and I highly recommend it! ...more

What a book! I don't want to say ANYTHING about the plot... but it covers 3 generations of a very entertaining family. It's charming, sad, funny, hopeful and beautifully, beautifully written. Just... please don't make a movie out of it. If you have not read this book...read it now! It's glorious! ...more

This was a good read. So many people either really struggled through it or just gave up on it. I didn't have any trouble and really enjoyed the whole story. ...more
