This was quite a book. It took me FOREVER to read it. I am still not clear in my mind exactly how I feel about it. I can say the last half of the book was much better than the first half. The first half would get a 2 out of 5 and the last half would get a 4. I thought the author was very thorough in his story telling. So much so, I think the novel dragged. Especially in the beginning. I don’t understand why he went in so much detail about the grandparents of the main character. Yes, their histor ...more

I finished Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides, about a week ago. I mentioned before that I was reading it and how much I was enjoying it. It’s taken me about a week and still all I can seem to say is ……Wow! Really, this is a book you just need to read. There is so much to the book, so many facets, so many themes, that I am having a difficult time putting my thoughts on the book into words.

The story is about Calliope who is an hermaphrodite, but grows up not knowing. She “is a girl” for 14 years u

The story of a hermaphrodite struggling to find his/her place in the world, was actually very interesting, but it took me a while to get through this book. The book spends so much time on the lives of his parents and grandparents choices that lead up to the genetic mutation that created his situation, and then his early childhood as a girl. I wish the book had focused more on the coming of age part of narrator's live and fitting into the world as a hermaphrodite rather than all of the factors le ...more

We read this for book club a few years back and I liked it but I didn't love it. I have to admit I was much more interested in the hermaphrodite part of the story and grew weary of all of the family history although I can appreciate that it was well written. I think I've rotted my brain reading too many fluff books and now I'm impatient with books that require more attention-it's terrible! ...more

This was a very odd book. I managed to finish it but I did put it down for a week or so several times to read something else. The whole gender identity thing was kinda interesting but it's not a book I'd reread or recommend to a friend. (Unless maybe they were cross-gendered) ...more

Three stars because I read it some years ago, and can't remember much about it. I do remember not liking some of it, so can't rate it higher. Might have break my own rule and re-read it, since most people seem to love it. ...more
