What Members Thought

Grade: 3/10
Thoughts: A typical Japanese story line. Fucked up, makes no sense, and when they try to explain it, they make it so philosophical that it’s hard to understand anything at all. The characters were very likeable, and the worlds of the main character (who is nameless, now that I recall) are very enjoyable. Although at times I felt that the book was blatantly ripping off the idea of “daemons” from His Dark Materials, the over all message of the shadows was powerful.

This is one hell of a cool book. Gorgeously written and brilliantly conceived. I love all the literary and western cultural references, as well as the little mundane details of daily life that hint at ennui, sort of like Hemingway and Stieg Larsson. I may not have understood what was going on a lot of the time, and I may not generally enjoy the open-endedness associated with surrealism / magical realism. But 5 stars for style and pure originality.

According to this Reddit thread, this book is some seriously thought-provoking fiction.
