I decided to read this more out of a sense of duty than anything else: it is a science fiction classic, after all, and I really didn't know anything about it. Somehow, perhaps because of its length, I expected it to be a chore. I found out how wrong I was within the first few pages, and was engrossed from then on.

I initially read Dune in middle school and really loved it, but somehow upon reread, found it to be less engaging. It was a slog to get through the bulk of it, due to the writing style (filled with obscure jargon, mystical concepts, and did not flow). Characterization was bland for the most part.
To be clear, this is not a bad story, just...hard for me to get through. I give credit to this book for being a trailblazing classic of sci-fi, but I don't think I will be reading the rest of the series ...more
