This book does indeed describe four seasons in Kyoto, and in doing so tells the story of the author's sojourn in Japan. One of his reasons for the trip was to study Zen buddhism, and along the way he met Sachiko, a Japanese housewife, with whom he forms a relationship, the boundaries of which are never clearly defined.
