I was disappointed with this follow-up to The Giver. I actually didn't like The Giver as much as many people seem to, but I found it creepy and compelling. Here, I never connected with the characters and found the society sort of dull. I did like the "Matt" character, whom I understand is a star of the third book in the quartet, so perhaps I'll still give that one a try.

This is a companion book to The Giver, painting a dystopian society that is much harsher. Kira's mother has just died, leaving her an orphan. Kira is already viewed as an outcast as she has a damaged leg and walks with a limp. She is brought before the council of guardians on the charges of being a drain on the society. Her accuser has requested that she be left out in the fields for the beasts to destroy. Instead, the guardians decide that her special talent as a weaver could be useful to them ...more

My local library is having a summer adult reading program..in order to compltete a Bingo card I had to read a Science Fiction book..this was my pick. Love Ms Lowrey's books and this was no exception. Fell in love with Matt and Branchie from the Fen. A quick read with twists and turns. ...more

Kira was born with a twisted leg and in her village she would have been left in the field for beasts to eat except for her widowed mothers fight for her. Now Kira's mother has died and Kira's one hope of surviving may be in her talent for needlework. If the book didn't specifically say it was a companion to The Giver I would never have guessed.
