If I tell you that this book had magic, zombies and early 20th century technology, I'm sure your reaction will be: WTH? But believe it or not, the author managed to create a cohesive world that seamlessly mixes all these elements in a way that makes sense.
The first part of the book was a bit slow because it was mostly Sabriel on her own. But once she gets some companions (a talking cat and a fellow mage), things become more interesting. Mogget (the cat) is particularly witty and Touchstone (the ...more

I really enjoyed this book, which was really a pleasant surprise. I'd approached it with considerable trepidation, since I found Nix's Keys to the Kingdom YA book so pathetically rote. But I realized recently that I shouldn't dismiss an author and his entire output just because of one lousy book. Here on GoodReads I'd heard a lot of positive stuff about the Abhorsen series, so I figured this was my chance to test this idea that one really, really mediocre book doesn't mean that everything the au

For someone who doesn't read a lot of fantasy, I was completely taken by this book. It took me a little time to understand the world and how it worked, but I was so taken by Sabriel and her role as Abhorsen that I just couldn't put the book down. And then when we meet Mogget, the most awesome cat sidekick I think I've encountered in fiction so far (and so very, very CAT) I was hooked. Although the romance at the end was a bit contrived and made me cringe a tiny bit, I don't think it detracted fr

Wavering between three and four stars here. I found the ideas behind the book sort of cool: the necromancer who controls the dead with various bells, the idea of magic performed with charter marks vs. free magic, the Old Kingdom and the new. Yet, the story didn't really grab me despite it's cool ideas and solidly good writing. The plot was repetitive--Sabriel defeats bad guy, then moves on, then does it again.

Very enjoyable book with highly original worldbuilding -- especially loved the juxtaposition of one world similar to ours and a magical realm with a Wall, magic systems, and strong character development throughout the book. It is one of the original 3 plots for all books but this doesn't detract at all from the reading. I picked this book up to fill a requirement and had such a great time reading it that I'll finish the series now.
