What Members Thought

One thing about Hardy - you know it will end badly. Just how this story gets to that point and all the zigzags along the way kept me reading. There were surprises. Those 19th century writers were masters of plot, something I can't say about a lot of more contemporary writers. The anti-hero is a man who consistently recognizes too late that he has gone too far, but he doesn't seem to be able to escape who he us.

Michael Henchard is a timeless character, a man whose fatal flaws undermined all that he could have achieved. And, Hardy's powers of description are outstanding in the book.
