Stunning. I am not worthy. An exploration of loneliness and the need for connection - somehow, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter manages to be beautifully and lyrically written, while remaining grounded in gritty descriptions of banal everyday life. A very dark, but very empathetic novel. I'm having a hard time summing it up, but I highly recommend it. ...more

This is an extraordinary book. That Carson McCullers possessed such empathy and psychological insight at age 23, when it was published, is remarkable. It is a character study of five disparate individuals whose paths cross but to whom we do not readily relate, yet by the end we have come to know and care about them. It reminded me of To Kill a Mockingbird in that it is set in the South during the depression and it tells the story of a young girl, Mick Kelly, whose family is barely making it, run ...more
