What Members Thought

A mixture of historical and romance fiction. The book is too long and I got bored in some moments also despite the fact that this book is a bookseller.

This is my second reading of this book, and I loved it as much as I loved it the first time. I should say that this is my second time listening to this book and that I might have loved it even more had I actually read it, as Madelaine Miller’s writing is very poetic and I want to savor it more.

This novel was part of the Tournament of Books summer 2018--I requested the book in May, I got it at the end of September, well after the end of the ToB. But if it weren't for the ToB, I would not have read it. I did not much enjoy The Song of Achilles.

Listened to this as an audio book while running. This beautifully written fantasy presented a radically dystopian view of the Greek Gods, turning them into a classical version of today's idle and corrupt 1%. What's not to like about that? Well, what's not to like is the bias of the author in favor of men, especially young men, and her semi-transparent fantasy of finding in her middle or old age the perfect young male lover. The only worthwhile people in the novel besides our heroine Circe are th

Liked it, didn’t love it. I would call it a good story well told. The Greek gods and myths are at the centre of much western culture so it’s always interesting to see a different interpretation. In Circe, Miller imbues the goddess with mortal qualities, feelings and frailties. Perhaps that is as it hound be since the gods themselves were a human creation and served the purpose of explaining and trying to understand the world and its inhabitants.
