This is my second reading of this book, and I loved it as much as I loved it the first time. I should say that this is my second time listening to this book and that I might have loved it even more had I actually read it, as Madelaine Miller’s writing is very poetic and I want to savor it more.

As I read Madeline Miller’s Circe, one word continued to cloud my consciousness, ennui. Don’t get me wrong, Circe has all the elements of a mythological tour de force. There are literally gods and monsters, there’s a love story and everyone from Achilles, Helen of Troy and Odysseus to keep you occupied. Unfortunately, despite how fascinating those characters’ stories are, when they are interwoven with the rather misery laden life of our central character Circe, they a deemed wanting.

I always loved Greek mythology as a child (and Roman and Norse - wish I’d been exposed to more), so I was definitely predisposed to like this book and it didn’t disappoint. Like a fairy tale retelling (another sub-genre I love), Miller’s story of Greek gods and heroes through the eyes of Circe illuminates new facets of familiar characters. Miller’s story is feminist and relatable and compelling. I loved it.
