In a remote region of my mind there exists a bookcase. It’s labeled “authors I really should read more of”, and it is – as you might imagine – gigantic. There’s a philosophy corner, where Plato, Kant, and Wittgenstein, among others, are engaged in a bull session for the ages. A.S. Byatt, and Grace Paley share a shelf with Turgenev, Chekhov, and Gogol, right next door to China Mieville, Roberto Bolano, Haruki Nurakami and Salman Rushdie. It could be me. Maybe I'm just cranky and annoyed and in the mood for something more conventional...
Ok, I get that this was a departure from what was considered proper literature at the time of it's publication and that Woolf's groundbreaking movement towards stream of consciousness writing and moving through the characters to create omniscience was a new wave in the writing scene, but I found it annoying. i study literature as a hobby. i just finished a great bio of virginia by louise de salvo. i consider this type of reading as a form of homework for me. i know i am supposed to at least appreciate this ,great book, and i did recognize the beauty of her writing style. the only thing i enjoy about, stoc, stream of consciousness writing is how much i enjoy linear writing after i finish with it. i will read other of her works and enjoy parts of them.

This time around, while I still enjoyed it, I was less impressed with the book than I had been in the past. While the multiple perspectives were innovative and well done and the characters (mostly) compelling, I found that Woolf's treatment of nearly everyone was a bit superficial and stereotypical of their class and se ...more

i don't know what i'd think of the work if it didn't remind me so much of a former friend . . . but then, everything reminds me of someone. ...more

As in her other work, it's the notion of time that fascinates me in Woolf's work. This is my favorite of her novels. ...more
