I saved this book to listen to in October, and decided to read it a little ahead of October in hopes that I could talk about it on a podcast episode.
To my taste, I think I like The Haunting of Hill House better. A slow-burning and creepy masterpiece of psychological horror. This novel is told from the viewpoint of Merricat Blackwood, who has the narrative voice of a twelve year old, though we learn she is actually eighteen. A nice little read, fairly short, about a poisoning in a small town and its aftereffects. Although the murderer's i.d. became fairly clear fairly soon, the denouement of the story was a bit surprising and pretty amusing. Very enjoyable with good writing.
