I'm stunned that none of the reviews of this book thay I read, including Joyce Carol Oates, mention that this is not simply a reprise of Olive Kitteredge, but of at least two other of Strout's novels. The Burgess brothers and their sister make an appearance, grown from their appearance in The Burgess Boys, and so do "Amy and Isabelle" from the book of that name. This was a great read. My only regret is that I waited too long after reading Olive Kitteridge to read this continuation of Olive's story. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, I think it benefits from having read the first.
For the most part, the book alternates stories featuring Olive with stories about others in which she makes brief appearances. We see how Olive appears to others and then tune in to her inner monologues. The stories are well written and the characters, even minor ones, ef ...more

I loved visiting with Olive again and remembered why I fell in love with Elizabeth Strout's work in the first place. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys deep dives into characters and doesn't mind a slower plot.
