I jokingly referred to this book as "Pride and Prejudice and Politics", but I feel the description has merit. Margaret Hale has been raised in London by her rich aunt and superficial cousin. When her cousin marries, Margaret is sent back to live with her parents, a parson and the wife who never forgave him for not having more money, in the idyllic setting of Helstone. I was told by an acquaintance of mine that this was her favorite book. As she was an English major in college I gave her recommendation the highest respect. The storyline was good, the writing was well done, but I felt frustrated at how almost everyone in the book took advantage of the main character Margaret. Maybe it has to do with the cultural views of women in Victorian literature. I liked it but did not love it.
