There is a little of everything you could ever want from a Victorian novel here: Class politics, religion, gender politics, money, industry, poverty, mutiny, law, sentimentality and piety, a feisty heroine and a proud and gritty hero.

But even by Victorian standards, this is a very dark novel, full of suffering and death. Another reviewer referred to the "remorseless adversity" faced by the heroine Margaret, which says it all. The adversity is non-stop, and truly remorseless.

i picked up this book because it was a favourite of L. M. Montgomery's. it was easy reading, and i enjoyed it for the most part. it got a bit detailed in places, in the way a jane austen book would, but it was fun and not overly moralizing. it ended the only way it could- unrequitted love, miscommunication, and resolution (which forces the heroine into the arms of a man she could only love after he 'saves' her in some way). ...more
