I come away from "The Moviegoer" with very mixed feelings. Walker Percy was a beautiful writer, and I found myself reading several passages more than once just to enjoy the language, but I think I may be too old, even at 35, to truly appreciate and connect with a novel driven almost completely by existential feelings. It's not that I never personally feel existential dread -- I do, far more often than I'd like -- but, for the most part, I got the reading of these types of novels out of my system ...more

i was a philosophy minor in college so i should have liked this. i didn t get it. the people were cardboard, no feelings, no plot and one of the best of the 20th century, sad century. i daydream too much while reading. i didn t daydream reading KNOCKEMSTIFF BY POLLOCK..read him.

I should try this book again another time. For some reason it just didn't grab me. I find this odd because Binx is a character I understand. Why can I not bring myself to care about this book after reading 50 pages? Am I reading it at the wrong time in my life, is it the book, or both?

I did finish it after all because every ten pages brought a glowing observation from Binx, which is more than most offer, and I did care what happened to Kate, who reminds me so much of a friend of mine with her turns of outlook and her wickedness.
But such people are impossible to understand, so perhaps I misread both.
