Ann Patchett makes you feel this book intensely. I don't cry easily, but this story had me tearing up more than once. It's not the first time Patchett's writing has made me emotional, as she is a master at writing characters and storylines to grab your heart. I was so invested in the sister and brother protagonists that I had to keep reading to see what their futures held, finally realizing that all I could do was read this book through to the end. I started this book because I usually love Ann Patchett. I finished only because I promised a friend we could talk about it. I found the main characters off-putting, uninspiring, unimaginative. The narrator in particular was so incurious as to be almost unbelievable. Normally, Patchett takes us on a deep-dive into imagination and emotion (e.g., Bel Canto, The Patron Saint of Liars, The Magician's Apprentice) but these people--like the image on the book cover--left me cold and uninspired. it was a good book, but nothing to rave about in my opinion. i found myself semi invested in the characters, and something was lacking in the plot for me. i didn’t care for the mom’s return, and wasn’t sure of the point of it. and, as much as i love Tom Hanks as an actor, i didn’t care for his narration. perhaps i would have enjoyed it more.
