I thought this captured India really well and told its story beautifully, although I found the ending terribly depressing.

Read for Common Reader group.

Story set in northern India, where various tribal/ethnic elements clash, and so do social castes and Europeanized values and culture with Indian.

It is almost but not quite satirical, mocking I would say.

Very well written but could not hold my interest enough to finish it. The characters were eccentric, which is fine, but I found it hard to relate to or care about any of them.
