Basically a beautifully written poem about the slow art of dying. I don't recommend it if you're looking for plot driven fiction. If you enjoy a canopy of words eloquently interlocked, check it out. I could say more, but I've probably said enough. ...more

This book was not my cup of tea. Verbose to the point that it felt the author intentionally wrote flowery language and overly long paragraphs with no breaks in order to appear deep. A meandering meditation on the main character's life as he lays dying. So much telling and practically no plot, resulting in a boring novel. How did this win the Pulitzer? I almost picked up his latest This Other Eden, but then I read some reviews that said basically the same thing about his writing style (overwritte ...more
