What Members Thought

This book was great - I wonder what took me so long to try Colm Toibin, now I want to read all his books! His writing is lovely and restrained. What I liked most about the book was that in some ways it was what you were expecting, yet in other ways it was such a surprise. He is one of those authors who captures the female voice really well.

Sweet but not sappy. Probably more like a 3.5. The details of the era were fascinating. I thought the author did a good job at getting us into the main character's mind. Of course she is smart, bright and capable. While it is a well-worn story of a young woman coming to America and bettering herself, it also reveals the high cost and personal sacrifices necessary to achieve her new life.
