I found this book in a cruise ship library when I was trapped at sea. I probably would have read it eventually otherwise because it ends up on a lot of lists, but gothic tales of mysterious dead wives and big bleak mansions aren't usually my thing. It was a quick read, and I am not sure I envy the second Mrs. de Winter for her impossible situation.

The classic story of an unnamed girl who is swept off her feet by the much older Mr. de Winter, whose late wife drowned a year prior. She returns to Manderly, his Cornwall estate, and finds herself in over her head socially and intimidated by the household staff. The housekeeper is a creepy figure who retains a total fixation with the late wife. The circumstances become more complicated as more is revealed.

I give this 3 stars only because it took me 3-4 readings to tire of it, plus 2 viewings of the Alfred Hitchcock film.
A haunting story of how fear of the past can consume the present. My first reading (years ago) I may have given it 4 stars; my most recent, and probably last, only 2. The foreshadowing is, by now, embarrassingly obvious. The constant eerie atmosphere present through the first half of the book, tiresome. The characters, overly dramatic.
