I mostly liked this, but I had some mehhh moments. I disliked the way each adult's "back story" would basically overtake a chapter in far too much detail - the second half of the book dragged quite a lot to me, because of this. Mia was a touch too perfect, too calm and serene in the face of all of it, and the McCauleys were almost caricatures, with their ridiculous ignorance.

The story begins with the destruction by fire of a family's upper middle class home and then proceeds to explain what transpired to result in the fire. One interpretation is that the story is about two mothers: one who has created the "perfect" middle class life and the other who has lived on the fringes with her daughter. Both women have strong views about what it takes to be a good mother. The reader gets to judge which of them are correct. Great book for a discussion. ...more
