E.M. Forster wrote Maurice in 1912, although it was not published until 1971, after his death. I can see it was a very subversive book in 1912. It might also have autobiographical aspects, as Forster was a closeted homosexual, and Maurice’s wakening to his own sexuality rings so true (with the caveat here that I am a heterosexual female). Foster’s writing also shine in the social commentary of the class distinctions of England at the time. He is too an acute observer of his characters’ psycholog ...more
