Short-listed for the 2009 Booker Prize, this novel, set in 1940s England, is narrated by a country doctor who becomes entangled in the struggles of a family with much-reduced fortunes, who inhabit the crumbling estate in the village. Psychologically gripping and masterfully composed, this novel makes us reconsider our beliefs about superstition and sanity and leaves us wondering to the last page who or what exactly is the little stranger.

Absolutely fantastic. Waters is a gifted storyteller and writer, and I will happily read anything she writes - I have read all of her novels, and I think this one is tied with Tipping the Velvet for my favourite, even though they are very different books. In fact, one of the reasons I like Waters so much is that she does not write to a formula - each of her books is unique, a different story told in different ways.

Highly recommend this one.

I loved the writing in this book, and the ambibuous ending left me pondering the book for days.

This one creeps along, and the chill I got at the end was totally different than the chill I was expecting at the beginning. I'm thinking over in my head, "how did..? could it..? was that...?" Have to think Waters met some of her goals there. As I was reading, I kept imagining this portrayed as a film, so look out for that. And I spent quite a few pages reading with the equivalent of watching a movie from between my fingers- eyes darting ahead, not daring to dart ahead, avoiding but searching wh ...more

A disquietingly quiet ghost story set in a house decaying from more "mannered" times. I found myself looking for things out of the corner of my eye. ...more
