Stating the obvious for anyone who has both read this book and seen the myriad film interpretations of the story -- but they are not synonymous, congruent, nor anything approaching same. Those who are used to the Universal Studios' version of "Frankenstein," with Boris Karloff and lots of grunting, will be surprised to read Mary Shelley's original novel. It's hard to believe that this classic tale was written by a teenage girl. She does a pretty nice job here, although ultimately the lack of characterization overshadows the epic story line, which still fascinates everyone.

The story line is too over the top, and the language is very dense. It was quite the slog. But there are so many references made to it, it's nice to have a less caricatured idea of it. It is an amazing and pivotal work, even if I didn't enjoy it all that much. ...more
