Reading this one by email subscription from Dailylit.com.
....many weeks later.........
This book should be a cautionary tale for taking too much pleasure in your own vanity. Basically Dorian Gray sells his soul to retain his youth while the portrait ages and reveals his corruption. It isn't a joy to read, but at the same time I feel better off for having read it.

I always find it impressive when a classic that's based on a clever idea can continue to stand up over time, and Wilde's masterpiece does just that - the central conceit still works brilliantly. But the real beauty in this particular piece is how much he leaves unsaid. Most of Dorian Gray's crimes against convention go unexplained, with only lists of names in disgrace to stand for the havoc he wreaks.
