Cheekily old school in a new century, THE SHADOW OF THE WIND defies conventions and moves the gothic novel into 20th-century Barcelona. You'd expect, like an astronaut without his oxygen suit on the moon, such a thing would go down in a heap, but no, Carlos Ruiz Zafon pulls it off and makes Barcelona seem like Victor Hugo's sandbox. No small feat, that. Yes, you want to laugh at it now and again, but you're too busy turning pages, too busy asking yourself what Zafon has up his sleeve next. It's ...more
Kat (A Journey In Reading)
I read this book a couple of years ago and never completed a review of it until now (I know, what was I thinking?).

A terrific story - very well done. Quite Dickensian A well paced, well written story of justice denied and justice found.

What a great read. Terrific. Fun, fun, fun. Heroes, heroines, unspeakable evil, war, lust, romance, great wealth, horrifying poverty, stupidity, books, pens, priests, friends, a gorgeous backdrop (Barcelona and Paris). What more could a literate soul want in a novel. Bravo and encore.

This book is what The Da Vinci Code tried to be - a rich, multi-layered literary mystery with compelling characters and a complex, twisty plot. Well written and engaging. ...more
